🌐 Address Changes After Dispatch - General Policy for International Shipments
Once an international e-commerce order has been dispatched via postal services such as Airmail, Registered Package, ePacket, or SpeedPost, modifying the delivery address becomes extremely difficult. This limitation is due to the operational structures of international postal networks and their independent handling systems.
🔒 Limitations of Postal Systems
- Once an item has been posted, address modifications are generally not possible.
- After dispatch, the shipment is handed over to the destination country’s postal service, which operates independently and may not support real-time updates or coordination with the sender's postal service.
- Most national postal systems do not allow address changes once the package is in transit.
- Postal networks do not guarantee any requested address updates, even if attempted.
- If the original address on the label is valid, the package is typically delivered as addressed.
- If the original address is invalid, depending on local postal policies, the package may be returned to sender - but this is not assured.
- No confirmation or update is provided by overseas postal administrations regarding the success or failure of an address change request.
✅ Recommended Best Practices
- Implement real-time address verification during the checkout process.
- Encourage customers to double-check address accuracy before placing orders.
- Clearly inform customers that no post-dispatch address changes are guaranteed.
What can The Postal Connect do?
- If your request for Address Update / Change reaches us before 1 PM on the same day of posting, we can assist with the address change.
- A new label will be printed with the new address to be affixed over the existing one.
- System record will also be updated with the new address.
- However, for requests received after 1 PM, this can only be handled on a best-effort basis, with no guarantee.
- Such requests are will be officially submitted through the postal system. For some countries, such as Canada, the destination does not permit any updates after posting dispatch.
